Go ahead given to buy site

12 June 2002

The West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust has been given the ‘green light’ to spend over £1 million to purchase land for the new Sudbury Community Hospital development.

Approval for the purchase was given by the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Strategic Health Authority today, Wednesday 12 June, at a meeting with the West Suffolk Hospitals and Suffolk West Primary Care Trusts.

“This is good news for the people of Sudbury and represents a major step forwards towards building a new community hospital in the town,” said Keith Mansfield, Director of Finance for the West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust.

The eight acre site, which is adjacent to Churchfield Road and Waldingfield Road, is currently owned by Bayer Diagnostics Manufacturing (Sudbury) Limited and contracts are due to be exchanged in the next few days.

“Sudbury’s new hospital will be on a well located site with room for modern health services to meet future needs,” said Mark Crawley director of modernisation and development at the PCT. “It has the scope to integrate not only the services currently provided by the Walnuttreee and St Leonards Hospitals but also nursing, residential and GP facilities.”
