MOTHER’S MILK: The Start of Something Special

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week: 11-17 May 2003

The Maternity Unit at the West Suffolk Hospital takes part in National Breastfeeding Awareness Week
(Sunday, 11 May – Saturday, 17 May 2003)

The Maternity Unit is helping to promote the tenth National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, joining the Government’s drive to promote breastfeeding as the best form of nutrition for infants.

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week is a week-long Department of Health Campaign aimed at young mums and mums-to-be. This year the campaign is also calling on all those people in contact with new mums and mums-to-be, including partners, families and friends, to be actively supportive of breastfeeding.

The campaign highlights:

  • Breastfeeding is the healthiest option for mother and baby.

  • Breast milk provides complete nutrition for the first six months of life, and every extra week of breastfeeding makes a difference.

  • Support from family, friends and health professionals can make a real difference to whether a woman takes up breastfeeding.

The West Suffolk Hospital Breastfeeding Co-ordinators are organising a drop-in session for interested parents-to-be, their family and friends in the Parent Education Room within the Antenatal Clinic at the West Suffolk Hospital, on Monday, 12 May 2003 from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm.

For further information, contact Gerda Tooley on 01284 725333 Ext 2401 or Patricia Davis, Head of Midwifery, on 01284 713220.
