National Breastfeeding Awareness Week: 9-15 May 2004
The Maternity Unit at the West Suffolk Hospital takes part in National Breastfeeding Awareness Week (9-15 May 2004)

27 April 2004

The Maternity Unit at the West Suffolk Hospital is helping to promote National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, joining the Government’s drive to promote breastfeeding as the best form of nutrition for infants.

Midwives from the West Suffolk Hospital are running a stall in Cornhill Walk in Bury St Edmunds from 10am until 2pm on Monday 10th May. As well as displays and a range of information about breastfeeding, a raffle and face-painting will provide the fun! Midwives will be available for women to talk to about the pros and cons of breastfeeding.

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week is a week-long Department of Health Campaign aimed at young mums and mums-to-be. The campaign is also calling on all those people in contact with new mums and mums-to-be, including partners, families and friends, to be actively supportive of breastfeeding.

The campaign highlights:

Breastfeeding is the healthiest option for mother and baby.

Breast milk provides complete nutrition for the first six months of life, and every extra week of breastfeeding makes a difference.

Support from family, friends and health professionals can make a real difference to whether a woman takes up breastfeeding.
