Hospital chaplain celebrates 25 years of ministry

19 July 2004

The Chaplain at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, Revd David Crawley, has celebrated 25 years of service since his ordination to the priesthood.

Revd Crawley has worked as chaplain at the West Suffolk Hospital for the past 9 years. Before that he spent 11 years in a similar role at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He has also spent 22 years as a regimental padre in the Territorial Army.

“I feel privileged to have been a hospital chaplain for the past 20 years,” said Revd Crawley. “I am able to work alongside people of all faiths and none. It is an exciting opportunity to explore life in all its rich diversity.

“Chaplaincy is an integral part of the structure and life of hospitals, and it is important that we are seen to be part of that life.

“I have seen many changes over the years. We have a much larger Chaplaincy Department here at the West Suffolk Hospital than when I started, so I now have managerial responsibility as well. As the organisation changes, so does the chaplain’s role.

“I have enjoyed expanding and developing the Department. Among the highlights of my time at the West Suffolk Hospital are the ecumenical covenant signed in 2001 and the Dedication of the Multi Faith Room in June this year. I believe in encouraging people to be more inclusive.

“Priesthood for me is a vocation and sometimes you have to test that vocation and be prepared for the challenge it brings. Trying to discern God’s will is sometimes very difficult.”

On Saturday 3rd July Revd Crawley celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination with a service in the Hospital Chapel followed by a reception and lunch in Time Out restaurant, attended by 140 friends from across the country. He renewed his vows before representatives of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist Churches.

“Saturday was all about friendship, which was reflected in the prayers and readings at the service. I wanted to give thanks for the help, friendship and support I’ve received over the years.”
