New Chief Executive for West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust

21 April 2004

The West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust has appointed Chris Bown (correct spelling) as its new chief executive.

Mr Bown, is moving to the trust, which runs the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, from the Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Trust where he has been Director of Operations since 2001.

He has been in Birmingham since 1995 and before that worked at Guy’s and Thomas’ Hospital Trust in London. He is married and has two children.

“I am delighted that Chris will be joining us as chief executive. He has a wealth of experience in the NHS and an excellent record of success,” said chairman Veronica Worrall. “Chris joins us at a very exciting time. We are pressing ahead with our application to become a NHS Foundation Trust and developing new services and facilities, as well as treating more people at a higher standard than ever before.

“Our trust has an excellent reputation and enjoys tremendous support from local people, as evidenced by the more than 8,000 residents who want to be part of our Foundation Trust. We will be looking to Chris to build on all this and move us further forward in the cause of providing ever improving health services.”

Mr Bown, who is 43, will succeed John Parkes who has left the trust after two years to become chief executive of the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. A date when he will take up the post has yet to be agreed.

“I am very much looking forward to working with colleagues in west Suffolk to improve services to patients,” said Mr Bown.  “West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust faces a number of imminent challenges, such as the bid for Foundation Status and the implementation of Patient Choice. My priority once in post will be to secure its local priorities and ensure that acute healthcare provision in west Suffolk is as good as anywhere in the country.”
