New Midwifery Service for Newmarket

21 April 2004

A new Midwifery service has started in Newmarket, providing a step forward in the provision of maternity care in the town.  The King Charles Midwifery Group Practice provides total care for women during pregnancy, attending the births either in the home or hospital and giving postnatal care.

Part of West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust, the team has been named the King Charles Midwifery Group Practice to recognise Newmarket’s historical links with both King Charles the 1st and 2nd. Their aim is to provide women with a seamless pathway of care throughout pregnancy and after the birth.

The team philosophy is one that encourages and supports the normality of childbirth by offering continuity of midwifery care during pregnancy, childbirth and in the post-natal period. The team aims to assess the onset of labour in the women's home, providing one to one care for women choosing to give birth at the West Suffolk Hospital and those opting to give birth at home.

The team works in partnership with their medical colleagues to provide care for women requiring hospital treatment. The Midwives support  both the women and their families in making a confident transition to parenthood through the provision of pregnancy care, parenting education and post-natal care.

Care will continue to be provided for those women choosing to give birth at the Rosie Maternity Hospital as it is now.
