Hospital trust recognized for improving working lives

19 January 2001

The West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust's commitment to improving the working lives of staff was recognised at a major conference in Birmingham last week (10 January 2001).

Assistant Head Chef Kevin Bailey, received the IWL (Improving Working Lives) pledge accreditation award on behalf of the trust from Nigel Crisp, Permanent Secretary/Chief Executive of the NHS.

He said: "lt gave me great pleasure to receive the award which I hope will stimulate the trust to consider all the areas we can improve to make a difference to the working lives of all members of staff - a happy and fulfilled workforce works best for patients."

The West Suffolk was one of only two trusts in the Eastern Region of the NHS and 16 trusts in the country to receive the award.

'The Trust Board has pledged its commitment to developing an environment in which staff feel valued, supported and involved in the provision of high quality patient care," said Johanna Finn, Chief Executive of the trust.

Every member of staff has access to Familylife Solutions, a free and confidential helpline for those who have a care responsibility. A Career Break Scheme, special training and development programmes and flexible working patterns are helping staff achieve a better balance between working life and personal and family responsibilities.

With help and advise from the local police a zero tolerance approach to violence and aggression is providing support to staff in sensitive areas. The Trust has also found a private business partner willing to build and run a creche on the West Suffolk Hospital site.

Note: Kevin Bailey will be formally presenting the award to the Chief Executive Johanna Finn just prior to the start of the Trust Board meeting on Friday 26 January at 9.55 am.
