Pharmacy Education and Training

We have a dedicated pharmacist and senior technician involved in an educational and training programme for pharmacy, medical and other ward based staff. The aim of this programme is to reduce the risk of medication and drug related errors within the trust and to provide lifelong learning for the pharmacy and multidisciplinary teams.

The programme includes regular teaching sessions to pharmacy by specialists, covering a variety of areas ranging from ‘Use of larvae in wound healing” to ‘Treatment of HIV/AIDS’.

Medical and nursing staff also receive training on a variety of medication related issues from pharmacists and technicians.

We have a rolling student pharmacy technician programme (2 years) for which the students are trained to the NVQ Level 3 standards. ATO’s are trained to NVQ Level 2. We have our own assessing and internal verifying team.

The qualified technicians are encouraged to extend their roles including accredited final checking and patient consultation skills for which competence is accredited regionally. All technician staff working at ward level also complete our in house ward based competencies.

All training is constantly reviewed through personal development plans and appraisals.
