Diabetic Eye Screening

ANNUAL DIABETIC EYE SCREENING: WHY?

If you have diabetes you should attend the diabetic screening clinic; why?

·         Diabetes can cause eye problems!

·         You cannot tell if your eyes have been damaged by diabetes.

·         If problems aren’t picked up and treated, they can lead to blindness.

·         It is very important that you have a special eye examination each year.

·         If any problems are found, treatment can be arranged to stop them from getting worse.

For this reason, your GP and others in the West Suffolk area have set up a diabetic eye screening service for everybody in their care who has diabetes.

The service works by highly skilled technicians travelling to each GP practice once a year with all the equipment necessary to carry out the tests. You will receive an invitation from your GP to attend the screening clinic in advance. For reasons of maintaining an efficient system it is important that you inform your doctor of any change of address, or if you have left the practice.

We expect to see 5,000 people each year, so the key to attaining this target is that the process from when you get the appointment letter to receiving the results is handled as efficiently as possible.

You can help us by

·         Turning up at your appointment time and date.

·         Informing your GP surgery if you are unable to attend.

We do understand that for reasons of illness or holidays it is not always possible to attend on the designated day, so we have arranged alternative clinics at a later date which are as close as possible to your GP practice, however a bit of extra travelling may be involved.

“Our aim is to provide a friendly and efficient eye screening service.”
