Name change for Nursing Assistants at West Suffolk Hospital

13 June, 2003

West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust has renamed Health Care Support Workers as Nursing Assistants after consulting with staff.

This came about after ward staff reported to management that the title of ‘Health Care Support Worker’ was confusing to patients and visitors, who were not sure what their role entailed.

Staff also felt that the title did not accurately reflect the vital work that they do. They voiced a strong belief that the word ‘nursing’ was needed in their job title, as much of their time is directly taken up with patient care, ensuring patients are comfortable and clean. Their role to support the nursing team is essential to the efficient running of any clinical area.

“Following a Trust wide survey of staff opinion, listening and acting on what was said, the decision was taken to rename the role as Nursing Assistant because this more accurately reflects what they do on a daily basis,” said Chris Fell, workplace training co-ordinator. “Staff I have spoken to say the title of ‘Nursing Assistant’ best describes their role and is simple for the public to understand. ‘Nursing Assistant’ identifies them with the profession, establishes they are part of the nursing team and acknowledges the experience they have.”

Nursing Assistants who qualify to NVQ Level 3 can train to become qualified Nurses. Each year, 6 Nursing Assistants from the Trust are seconded to undertake the 3-year diploma in nursing. This is a popular route into nursing for people who lack the necessary qualifications to directly undertake the diploma. Practical experience working on a hospital ward buttresses the formal study element of the course.
