New surgeon for West Suffolk Hospital

Dr Sue Deakin has joined the West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust in Bury St Edmunds as the seventh consultant orthopaedic surgeon.  This is a new post, and the Trust will shortly be advertising for orthopaedic surgeon number eight.

Sue has just completed her specialist registrar rotation on the Manchester circuit, where she most recently worked at the Wrightington Hospital for Bones and Joint Diseases in Wigan. She graduated in Medicine from Newcastle University in 1990, and now specialises in paediatric orthopaedics and foot and ankle surgery.

“During my training I enjoyed accident and emergency work and also enjoyed surgery, so orthopaedics seemed to be the perfect combination,” said Sue. “It is a satisfying specialty because you can see people recover quite quickly, so you get to see the results of your work.

“I chose to join the West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust because it is a forward-thinking and friendly organisation with a dynamic young team of managers and consultants.”

Sue has family connections in Norfolk, and also has a young family of her own.

“I am looking forward to getting to know Suffolk, and getting to the coast when the sun comes out.  It will also be good to avoid motorways for a while!”

“Sue’s arrival marks a major addition to the Trust’s clinical expertise,” said Jan Bloomfield, Director of Personnel and Corporate Resources at the Trust.  “It is good to see a woman in a traditionally male field such as orthopaedic surgery, and I know she has a lot to offer the service we provide to our patients.”
