West Suffolk Hospital donates redundant equipment to the Third World
21 October 2003
West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds is donating redundant medical and office equipment to the Third World through independent charity Tools With A Mission (TWAM).
The excess equipment will be collected on Friday 24th October, and will include an X-ray viewer, bedside cabinets, chairs, video equipment, hoists, computers, monitors, instrument trays and an operating table. The equipment will go to furbish hospitals in South Africa which provide medical care for some of the poorest communities in the country.
“This is a great opportunity for the West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust to help developing countries by providing much needed medical equipment,” said Steve Moore, Director of Facilities. “The equipment we are donating is no longer of any use to the hospital, usually because technology has advanced or spares are no longer available. Rather than throw the items away, we are giving them to a charity which will use them in parts of the world which don’t enjoy the same level of investment in healthcare that we know in this country.”
Tools With A Mission send new and refurbished tools all over the world from their headquarters at Perry Barn near Ipswich. Some tools are made up into kits before sending abroad, for use by carpenters, electricians or builders. The charity has also set up overseas workshops and offices to train locals in various trades and skills.
