Pre-registration Training Year

The West Suffolk Hospital employs two pre-registration students annually on a 12 month rotational programme covering all pharmaceutical areas. Comprehensive training is given and some degree of responsibility, in preparation for career progression. The graduate is expected to carry out a project to aid the department and usually presents one large case study during their training year.

Regional study days are attended, organised by the academic pharmacy practice unit at the university of East Anglia www.pharmacy.uea.ac.uk . The local certificate course for clinical pharmacy for postgraduate pharmacists can also be attended if staffing permits. In some instances the pre-registration student may be permitted to sit the certificate course examination in November of the year they qualify rather than the following summer, provided course work is completed.

The clinical pharmacist ensures comprehensive clinical training with regular ward visits to the different specialist wards including ITU, SCBU, etc.

The pre-registration training at the West Suffolk Hospital complies with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society requirements.

Overseas students from EEC countries, South Africa and Australasia have been given pre registration training within the department. Students wishing to enquire should write directly to the Chief Pharmacist.
