You and Your Baby

Special Care Baby Unit

An appointment can be made to visit the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) during pregnancy if you feel your baby will need to spend time there. The staff on the unit will be happy to show you round.

The babies who are cared for in SCBU are either small, premature, have an infection, a feeding problem or just require special observation. Most parents who have babies in this unit are understandably worried. The unit has specially trained staff to care for your baby. On admission, staff will explain why your baby has come to SCBU, and all progress will be discussed with you. Staff are available at any time to talk to you and discuss your worries. Please do not hesitate to ask.

We encourage you to be involved in your baby's care as much as possible. We have a parents' room on SCBU and you are most welcome to stay, if the room is vacant.

Parents and siblings are welcome on the unit at any time, and other visitors for short periods, only with the parents' permission. A quiet time for parents only is between 12noon and 2.30pm. There is a direct telephone line on the unit for parents' use. A video camera is in operation and security locks are fitted on the doors.

SCBU is very warm and once inside you would be more comfortable wearing light summer clothing.

If your baby remains on the SCBU when you are discharged, you are welcome to use our staff restaurant or facilities when you visit.
