The Portering Department provides an essential service which contributes to the smooth day-to-day running of the hospital; it operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and does its utmost to meet all challenges that come its way.

Mission Statement

We will provide a rapid response to enhance the standard of health care provided by the Trust.

Aims

The Portering Department provides an essential service, which contributes to the smooth day-to-day running of the hospital; it operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and does its utmost to meet all challenges that come its way. 

Jim Pretty Portering Manager said, “We will provide a rapid response to enhance the standard of health care provided by the Trust.” 

Responsibilities

The portering service is also keen to supply staff to cover various areas where additional manpower may be required on an ad hoc basis.  Areas already covered include the Mortuary, Electro Biomedical Equipment Library, Theatre and X-ray.   

The Portering Department has a wide and varied responsibility within the Trust which cover most of the following:-

Responsibilities on a daily basis:

  • Re-stock of cylinders storage rooms
  • Food trolley delivery and collection
  • The collection of non-clinical and clinical waste
  • The delivery of clean linen and the collection of dirty
  • The delivery and collection of all post
  • Inter-ward transfer of patients
  • Changing medical gas cylinders on ward and departments
  • Re-stocking of the main cylinder store

Less frequent tasks:

  • Taking deceased patients to the mortuary
  • Attending fire alarm incidents    
  • Attending security incidents
  • Attending cardiac arrests

Departmental Porters are based in:

  • Accident and Emergency
  • Central Sterile Services Department
  • Endoscopy Suite
  • Emergency Assessment Unit
  • Outpatients Department
  • Care of Elderly
  • Post Room
  • Physiotherapy
  • Joyce Cockram Day Hospital/Occupational Therapy
